Uttarakhand India

More than a third of the Himalayas lie in India, spanning the entire northern stretch of the sub-continent - an astonishing arc nearly 3,200 kilometers long. Within this mass of peaks and valleys are some of the country’s most beautiful areas.

One of the youngest states of the country it is blessed with magnificent glaciers , majestic snow-clad mountains, gigantic peaks, valleys of flowers, deep gorges, alpine meadows, and luxuriant forests.

Garhwal - Called the Abode of the Gods, this area represents the essence of Hinduism. Here lies the source of the Ganga, India’s holiest river and four most sacred shrines for Hindus. Also it is home to a lot of Himalayan peaks including the Nanda Devi and the Shivling.

Kumaon - Bordering with Nepal this area has a lot of freshwater lakes. A lot of picturesque places offering wide views of the high Himalayas.

  Gaumukh Tapovan Trek
An area which has been attracting people for centuries.
The trek starts from the 18th century temple of Gangotri and goes beyond the source of Ganga to the meadow of Tapovan, favourite spot for sadhus meditating in the Himalayas.
Gaumukh, the snout of the glacier, Tapovan and the mighty peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas definitely make it a special trek.

Traditionally this trek has been continuously used by the Gujjars, the nomadic herdsmen who get their buffalos to the high meadows every summer and occasionally by the pilgrims / sadhus walking between Gangotri and Yamunotri.   Kuari Pass (3690m)
The pass is probably the best window to view the high Himalayan peaks. The views are simply breathtaking, facing north the vision sweeps from the gorges of Trishul in the east to the peaks of Kedarnath in the west - the Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Nilkantha, Kamet, Gauri Parbat, Hathi Parbat, Nandadevi, Bethartoli, Dunagiri – (all high 6000ers or 7000 m peaks) lined one after the other in a magnificent arc … Southwards the foothills stretch wave upon wave on to the dim haze of the distant plains. Dotted by some remote villages one also gets good insights into the local life.
